Description
The Hong Kong orchid tree is a hybrid leguminous tree with large thick leaves and striking purplish red flowers which are fragrant, orchid-like of about 10 to 15 centimeters across. The blooming lasts long from early November to the end of March. The tree originated in Hong Kong in 1880 and is referred to as bauhinia in non-scientific literature. The tree is probably one of the most beautiful flowering trees; however, they tend to be messy when leaves start to fall. We did not know this when we planted five of them but then when they mature, we have to rake leaves would have more than 10 bags of leaves every other week. So, we had to pay money to have four of them removed. We will have one left and it has a large canopy and start to flower profusely in November.
