Description
Ruddy turnstones are short, stocky, and oval-shaped shorebirds. They are named turnstones because they search for food by flipping rocks, pebbles, and shells along shorelines. Ruddy turnstones all have orange legs, but the colors of their plumage differ from breeding to non-breeding adults. Non-breeding adults and breeding females have pale plumage. Breeding male adults have a colorful plumage with black-and-white on the head and throat and chestnut and black variegated pattern on the back. The bird in the photo is a beautiful breeding male standing on one leg.
